If you love a good Summer cocktail, brace yourself, because we might’ve just found your new favorite. While at Puerto Rico’s annual food festival, Saborea, we discovered a simple and hydrating combination every mixed-drink connoisseur should know: coconut water and whiskey.
Though it’s already beloved in Puerto Rico, we talked to mixologist Tad Carducci, cofounder and principal of Tippling Bros, to better understand why. “Both whiskey and rum are widely consumed in the Caribbean and Latin American countries,” he wrote in an email. “Blended scotch and coconut water is a delicious, simple drink. The flavors work very well together, and you stay hydrated while you get [drunk]!” Genius, right?
Tad approves of the combination so much, he even crafted his own scrumptious recipe, The Bee and the Monk, for JW Marriott‘s Cocktails With Purpose program. “The ‘Bee’ in the name ‘The Bee and the Monk’ refers to the honeyed qualities of the whiskey as well as the use of raw honey,” he explained, “while ‘The Monk’ is a nod to chartreuse being made by Carthusian monks. The coconut brings an earthy but refreshing sweetness to the drink and ties all the flavors together.”

1 1/2 ounces Famous Grouse blended Scotch whiskey
1/4 ounce Yellow Chartreuse
2 ounces coconut water
1/2 ounce raw honey syrup
1 ounce lemon juice
Shake all ingredients together, and strain into chilled rocks glass.
