Mickey Birthday Cake Banner
Wish your little Mouseketeer “happy birthday” with this DIY sign. It creates a pop of color for your party table and cute decor for their bedroom after the festivities!
What You’ll Need:
Letters
- 6” white cardstock letters spelling “HAPPY BIRTHDAY”
- Puffy paint
- Craft foam in 6”x8” rectangles
- Scissors
- Hot or tacky glue
Cake Slices
- Cardstock
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Mickey template
- Craft foam
- Watercolor paper
- Tacky glue
- Puffy paint
- Popsicle sticks
- Washi tape
Banner
- White, cotton twine
- Tape or hot glue

How to Make It:
- Create the letters: Add puffy paint to the letters that looks like sprinkles, each line about 1/4” long. Vary the colors so they look like real sprinkles. Allow them to dry.
- Mount each letter on a 6”x8” foam rectangle using tacky or hot glue. Let them dry and set aside.
- Create the cake slices: Draw a 3-layered cake slice on cardstock. Cut out each layer and the top of the cake slice so you have 4 cake pieces that you can reassemble.
- Download, print, and cut out the Mickey template that will fit in the center of the cake layers.
- Place (don’t glue) the 3 layers of cake onto a surface and make space (about 1/4”) between each to emulate frosting.
- *Trace the Mickey template onto the cake. Cut out the trace marks and you will have a Mickey-shaped hole in the center of the cake slices. This will be your cake slice template. Trace all of the layers onto craft foam and cut out.
- Then trace your Mickey template onto foam and cut it out to have your Hidden Mickey inside the cake.
- Assemble all of the pieces of your cake onto the watercolor paper (or other thick white paper). Use tacky glue to attach the bottom layer, then use the Mickey-shaped foam piece to space out the other layers and glue all of them down. Let the cake slice dry.
- Then cut off any excess paper, and add puffy paint sprinkles to the top of the cake. Let them dry.
- Make 3 frosted rosettes by cutting out circles of thick white paper. Cover them with dabs of white puffy paint all the way around, starting with the outside edge and working in a circle towards the middle. Allow them to dry, then use tacky glue to attach the rosettes to the top edge of the cake slice.
- Make a birthday candle by cutting a popsicle stick in half and covering it with striped washi tape.
- Cut a flame shape out of craft foam and use tacky glue to add it to the top of the “candle.” Attach it to the cake. Then let it dry.
- Repeat these steps for more cake slices.
- Assemble the banner: Attach white, cotton twine to the backs of the letters and cake slices. Space each about 1 1/2” apart. You can use heavy duty tape or dabs of hot glue. Make sure the twine is secured to the edges of the letters so they hang straight. Let the banner dry completely.

*Note: For easier execution, instead of cutting the Mickey shape out of the cake slice, keep it intact and glue a foam Mickey shape on top.

Mickey Sprinkles Photo Backdrop
Channel your kiddo’s love for sprinkles into a unique photo backdrop. The partygoers will have such a blast posing for pictures.

What You’ll Need:
- Craft foam
- Scissors
- Hot glue
- Mickey template
- Cardstock
- Pencil
- Foam core pieces (1”x1” and 2 1/4”x2 1/4”)
- Tacky glue
- Large white canvas drop cloth (or drop cloth painted white)
- Rod (optional)

How to Make It:
- Create the tube sprinkles: Cut pieces of foam craft into 6”x6” squares.
- Roll the foam into tube shapes similar to a toilet paper roll and use hot glue to tack it in place.
- Create the Mickey sprinkles: Download, print, and cut out a Mickey template that will fit into a 6”x6” square. Then trace it on different colored craft foam (we used about 5 of each color). Cut out the shapes with scissors.
- Use small pieces of foam core to give the Mickeys dimension when they are adhered to the canvas backdrop. Add small pieces to the back of his ears (1”x1”) and a larger piece to his head (2 1/4”x2 1/4”). Glue the foam core to the Mickeys with tacky glue.
- Assemble the backdrop: Make a pocket at the top of the canvas by folding it 6” back and hot gluing it in place. This should be big enough for you to slip a rod through to make hanging easier.
- Place the canvas on the floor and lay out sprinkles and Mickeys. Then hot glue them in place.
- There are so many different options for hanging the backdrop for your party. For instance, you could place 2 long nails into the wall and rest the rod on the portion that’s exposed.

Mickey Confetti Cake
This is one magical cake—made with a sprinkles batter, topped with Mickey confetti, and filled with a Hidden Mickey surprise. Oh, boy!

Serves: 12
Ingredients
Cake
- 3 3/4 Cups all-purpose flour, sifted
- 1 Tsp baking powder
- 3/4 Tsp baking soda
- 1 1/2 Cups (3 sticks) butter, room temperature
- 2 Cups sugar
- 5 large eggs, room temperature
- 1 Tbsp vanilla extract
- 1 3/4 Cups buttermilk, room temperature
- Red food coloring
- 1/2 Cup rainbow sprinkles
- Toothpicks
- Mickey Mouse cookie cutter
Honey Vanilla Buttercream Frosting
- 1 1/4 Cups (2 1/2 sticks) butter, softened
- 5 Cups powdered sugar
- 3-4 Tbsp heavy cream
- 2 Tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 Cup honey
Confetti
- Mickey template
- Cardstock
- Scissors
- Candy melts
- Pastry bags
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350° F. Grease and lightly flour a 9”x13” pan and 8” round pan with high sides.
- Make the cake: Whisk the flour, baking powder, and baking soda together in a large bowl. Set aside.
- Using a handheld or stand mixer fitted with a paddle or whisk attachment, beat the butter and sugar together on high speed until smooth and creamy, for about 3 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula as needed. On medium-high speed, add 1 egg at a time, incorporating it well after each addition. Beat in the vanilla extract.
- With the mixer on low speed, add the dry ingredients in thirds alternating with the buttermilk. Mix after each addition just until incorporated. Do not overmix. The batter will be slightly thick.
- Add half of the batter into a separate bowl and mix with red food coloring. Then add sprinkles to the other half.
- Pour the red-colored batter into the 9”x13” pan and bake for 15-17 minutes. Test for doneness by inserting a toothpick and having it come out clean. Allow it to cool completely. Then place cooled cake into the freezer for 30 minutes.
- Using a Mickey Mouse cookie cutter, press into the red cake and cut out several mickey shapes.
- Cover the bottom of the greased 8” cake pan with the sprinkles batter.
- Place the red Mickey cake slices upside down into the 8” cake pan, vertically and close together to make a complete circle.
- Cover the Mickeys with the remaining batter. Tap the pan on a hard surface a few times to make sure the batter is covering all of the Mickey shapes.
- Bake the cake for 55-65 minutes and test the center of the cake for doneness. It will be caramelized on the outside, which is normal.
- Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan set on a wire rack.
- Make sure to turn the cake upside down before frosting, making the Mickey shape right-side up when cutting into the cake.
- Make the frosting: In a large bowl using a handheld or stand mixer with the paddle attachment, beat the butter on high speed until creamy, for about 2 minutes. Add powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, until well combined. Add the vanilla extract and heavy cream. With the mixer running on low, add the honey. Add more powdered sugar if the frosting is too thin, and more cream if it’s too thick.
- Make the confetti: Download, print, and cut out the Mickey template. Place it underneath parchment paper. Melt candy melts in several different colors. Spoon them into piping bags and snip off a small tip for more control while piping. Pipe candy melts onto the parchment paper in Mickey shapes.
- Create geometric confetti by piping individual circles and squares of the same colors. Let all of the confetti harden at room temperature.
- Assemble and frost the cake: If needed, using a large serrated knife, slice a very thin layer off the top of the cake to create a flat surface. Turn the cake upside down on a cake plate (only if you haven’t flipped it over already), and use a spatula to evenly cover the top and sides with frosting.
- Add sprinkles, broken up geometric confetti, and Mickey confetti.
- Then cut slices to reveal the Hidden Mickey inside.

Mickey Shorts Pull-Apart Cake
For another fun spin on traditional birthday cake, this Mickey Shorts Pull-Apart Cake is made of cupcakes, frosted to look like Mickey’s shorts. It’s simply adorable!

Serves: 16
What You’ll Need:
Cupcake Cake
- Cupcake liners
- 1 3/4 Cups cake flour
- 1/4 Tsp baking soda
- 3/4 Tsp baking powder
- 1/2 Cup (1 stick) butter, room temperature
- 1 Cup sugar
- 3 large egg whites, room temperature
- 3 Tsps vanilla extract
- 1/2 Cup sour cream, room temperature
- 1/2 Cup whole milk, room temperature
- 1/2 Cup rainbow sprinkles
- Toothpicks
Vanilla Buttercream Frosting
- 1 1/2 Cups (3 sticks) butter
- 6 Cups powdered sugar
- 3-4 Tbsps heavy whipping cream
- 2 Tsps vanilla extract
- Red food coloring
- Piping bags and round tips
- Scissors
- Offset spatula
How to Make It:
- Bake the cake: Preheat the oven to 350° F. Fill a 12-cup muffin pan with cupcake liners. Line a second one with 4, as this recipe makes about 16 cupcakes. Set aside.
- Whisk the cake flour, baking powder, and baking soda. Set aside.
- Using a hand or stand mixer, beat the butter on high speed until smooth, for about 1 minute. Add the sugar and mix on high speed for 2 minutes until everything is creamed together. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula as needed.
- Add in the egg whites and vanilla extract. Beat on medium-high speed until combined, then beat in the sour cream. With the mixer on low speed, add the dry ingredients until just incorporated.
- With the mixer still running on low, slowly pour in the milk until combined. Do not overmix. The batter will be semi-thick. Add sprinkles and gently mix in.
- Spoon the batter into the cupcake liners 2/3 full. Bake for 20-23 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cupcakes to cool completely before assembling and frosting.
- Make the frosting: Beat the butter with a stand or handheld mixer until creamed, for about 1 minute. Add the powdered sugar, thoroughly mixing 1 cup at a time. Add the vanilla and heavy whipping cream. Add more whipping cream if the frosting is too thick, and more powdered sugar if it’s too thin. Remove 1 cup of frosting to leave it white and add red food coloring to the remaining frosting.
- Assemble the cake: Arrange cupcakes in the shape of Mickey’s shorts, making sure they’re close together.
- Frost the cake: Snip a corner off of a piping bag. Then place a round tip inside. Add some of the red frosting to the bag. Outline the border of the cupcakes. Using an offset spatula, spread the remaining red frosting across the top of all the cupcakes, smoothing the sides and top. To make the squared corners, let the frosting harden slightly and build up the shape, using the spatula to gently pat and smooth out any rough edges.
- Add the white frosting to a piping bag with a round tip attached. On a piece of parchment paper, pipe 2 ovals for Mickey’s buttons.
- Smooth each with the offset spatula and allow them to set in the freezer for 10 minutes. Remove the frosting buttons from the parchment and place them on the frosted cake.
